TravelSmart Club Dec. prizes include Fanana, jet-set giraffe encounter

December free GoSee TravelSmart Club member prize winners get a unique jet-setting giraffe encounter at Orana Wildlife Park and a copy of leading 4WD trainer and traveller Vic Widman's latest book Classic Outback Tracks which reveals 19 of his favourite outback experiences.

Join the free GoSee Travel Smart members club and automatically join the draw for The Great Divide Tours – Classic Outback Tracks book. (The next Classic Outback Tracks book draws are Feb. and April).

Orana Wildlife Park Family Pass prize winner is Gaynor Henderson of Mosgiel NZ.

Fanana is only one year old but the young male giraffe is an essential part of the future for Orana Wildlife Park as future breeding bull in a program which has been running for 20 years. Fanana is especially popular with visitors to the wildlife park as they are able to hand feed him at the daily wildlife encounter from noon to 3pm.

Fanana was transferred from Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Australia last year after the death of Orana's much loved male giraffe Harold. Fanana is the first giraffe to fly into New Zealand since Orana's last breeding bull Harold flew to NZ in 1994. At 2.9m the travel crate with 2.6m Fanana in it was the highest that could fit on the plane.

Fanana landed in Auckland and then travelled by road to Wellington and then from Picton to Christchurch. He did the whole trip on a Zealandia Horticulture Ltd curtain-sider truck. Fanana took the Interislander ferry 'Aratere' across Cooks Strait. Zealandia and Interislander waived the respective transport costs and Telelift NZ assisted by donating their services when transferring Fanana from Orana's quarantine facility through the wildlife park to the giraffe habitat. Despite the generous support of various transport providers it cost more than $40,000 to bring Fanana to Orana.

Call of the Wild, the official newsletter of Orana Wildlife Trust says Fanana's airfare alone was $20,000. Orana Wildlife Trust asks for its supporters help. "Contributions directly assist the wildlife parks captive breeding program for the gracious giraffes", Chief Executive Officer Lynn Anderson said.

To donate to giraffe transfer project appeal, please either contact Orana directly on +64 3 359 7109 or   info@oranawildlifepark.co.nz Alternatively, complete the donation form on the Orana website or scan and email the form to Orana at info@oranawildlifepark.co.nz.

Harold sired nine offspring and Fanana's role is to sire many more youngsters. But as giraffe's reach maturity at about three to four years it will be some time before more calves are born at Orana.

Orana's giraffe breeding program has produced 17 calves.

Orana Wildlife Park on McLeans Island Road, Harewood is 10 minutes from Christchurch Airport and 25 minutes from Christchurch CBD. Open daily 10am until 5pm. Last entrance is 4.30pm. Closed Christmas Day.
