Easy access Canberra links caravanning and camping across Aust. capital
Eaglehawk Holiday Park reception.
Canberra is Australia’s best planned modern city with an exceptionally easy to use road network so towing through and across Canberra is a pleasure on wide, smooth road links.
Road travellers with pets have the choice of three caravan parks in the Canberra region.
They are: Eaglehawk Holiday Park, Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) and Queanbeyan Riverside Tourist Park.
The key routes are: From the Barton and Federal Highways to Northbourne Ave, to State Circle veering into Canberra Ave on an easy flat run to Fyshwick and Queanbeyan. This route leads directly to Canberra South Motor Park at the Fyshwick end of Canberra Ave.
It continues to Queanbeyan and Crestview Tourist Park and Riverside Tourist Park.
Or from the Barton Hwy coming from Murrumbateman to a right turn at the Parkway overpass lights onto this express route across Canberra suburbs to Tharwa.
Eaglehawk Holiday Park campsites.
Pre-planning makes the Canberra towing experience even happier.
For example do not look for Eaglehawk Holiday Park or nearby ‘no pets’ Capital Country Holiday Village (formerly White Ibis Holiday Village) in Sutton.
They are both off the service road at Eagle Hawk Hill near the colourful hotel which sits on the rise. They are accessed heading north toward Sydney from Canberra by the Eaglehawk Hill turnoff.
Coming from Sydney slow down, keep left and keep a sharp eye for the hard to spot left turn off the Federal Highway after passing under the Sutton interchange.
The Sutton address for the parks is entirely postal and the result is many GPS units don’t find the Eaglehawk Hill parks.
Eaglehawk Holiday Park is a participating GoSeeAustralia caravan parks so full details on the park are available via the GSA Multi-search facility.
Canberra South Motor Park is 4km from the Parliamentary triangle.

Traditional bush camping
ACT Parks and Conservation Service says the most popular and most Canberra accessible traditional bush campsite, Cotter Camping Reserve does not allow dogs. But it is easily accessed on a good sealed surface via Cotter Road. The Cotter provides a good, clean amenities block with hot water.
Cotter Camping Reserve is a left turn into the Reserve after crossing the Murrumbidgee River on a traffic light controlled single-lane bridge.
Campsites at Cotter Camping Reserve will easily handle a 21ft plus caravan.
Fees are $12 per person per night. Seniors $10. Concession $8. There is an honour box when the Ranger is not about. There are excellent fireplaces but it is BYO own wood or bags of firewood are available from the Ranger at $12 a bag.
In the Murrumbidgee River Corridor about 40min from Canberra only two campsites allow dogs. They are Blue Range Hut off Uriarra Road and Woods Reserve off the Tidbinbilla Ring Road.

There are toilets, shelter, picnic tables, wheelchair access and a dog exercise area on lead only. BYO own drinking water.
Namadgi National Park Information Centre, about 32 km from Canberra, says their Orroral Camping Area can handle small caravans.
Blue Range, Honeysuckle Camping Area and Woods Reserve are not really intended for caravans but small caravans could get in. Mount Clear Campsite is not for caravans, a spokesperson said.
This Canberra experience is all real camping, there is no power. Namadgi National Park is only 32km from Canberra CBD, but it covers about half of the ACT.
Cotter Rd and the Tidbinbilla Circuit is beloved by motorcyclists and bike riders. Some motorcyclists have a death wish so keep well left on curves.
Editors note: This GSA Information Article is based on seven days of visiting and photographing caravan and Recreational Vehicle (RV) caravan and camping options which are convenient to Canberra and its attractions.
This GoSee article uses a Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel tow vehicle and a 21ft dual axle caravan as the yardstick for comments made.
