RV parking area benefit for Ballarat tourism says CMCA

The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) says it supports the City of Ballarat Council in establishing a Recreational Vehicle (RV) parking area at Pioneer Park, Wendouree, for the benefit of the Ballarat community.

CMCA Chief Executive Officer Richard Barwick said today analysis shows that CMCA member travellers spend up to $700 a week exploring road tourism options. CMCA says it shares the public and Council's anger and frustration with the tactics of the Victorian Caravan Parks Association which seem, it says to be aimed at achieving nothing more than disrupting Council actions and subverting a proposal that has taken more than two years to put together.

CMCA Board Director, Keith Moxham, says he believes that the Victorian Caravan Parks Association’s (VCPA’s) letter of concern submitted just two days before the Council meeting was clearly designed to disrupt Council’s decision making processes and prevent RVs from accessing Ballarat.

“CMCA and the City of Ballarat Council have been working together to make Ballarat RV friendly and boost the city’s tourism industry for a number of years.

The Victorian Caravan Parks Association was free to raise any legal issues regarding Pioneer Park at any time during that process but decided to do this only at the last minute,” Keith Moxham said.

Over the past decade there have been an increasing number of RV travellers who prefer to access non-commercial accommodation options such as national parks, bush camps, and community-operated low-cost camps, the CMCA says.

These travellers typically own fully self-contained RVs with on-board shower and toilet, water tanks, grey and black water holding tanks, and solar panels.

They do not want or need the facilities of a full-service caravan park on a daily basis, a fact some in the caravan park industry cannot or will not accept, the CMCA says.

Ballarat local, Grant Tillett is one of 66,000 CMCA members and has been liaising closely with Council for many months to work through the range of issues associated with the development of the RV parking area.

“Ballarat based CMCA members believe our City is missing out on tourism revenue because there is nowhere in Ballarat that offers the accommodation facilities required to support self-contained RV travellers when they visit our city,” Grant Tillet said.

An RV parking area at Pioneer Park, with an associated dump point, will deliver those economic and social benefits to Ballarat experienced by around 200 CMCA RV Friendly Towns across Australia the CMCA says.

CMCA applauds the City of Ballarat Council in its efforts to establish an RV parking area and will continue to assist the Council wherever possible to achieve a successful outcome for the benefit of the Ballarat community, CMCA says.
