Canberra queued on Sunday, March 5 to spend time with His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia

They came in thousands to line up from the imposing vice regal gateway, all the way up the sweeping drive to the vice regal porch of the Governor General's lakeside home.

The Canberra Times reported this morning that about 4500 came for the Smith Family annual open day. The $20,000 they raised through their donations will go to The Smith Family Learning Through Life program, The Times said.

The educational program provides financial and personal support to students from financially disadvantaged  backgrounds

Once a year Government House opens its doors to the public and the people of Canberra obviously value "open house" at Government House on the eve of playing host for the Queen, who visits next week.

Guests queue for Government HouseGeneral Jeffery does  not have a behind closed doors approach. With a flat brimmed hat in hand and a ready hello for all he strolled the rolling lawns of the beautiful Yarralumla property meeting and greeting hundreds of visitors young and old.

Canberra City Band moved in to support the Governor General urged on by the flashing baton of their enthusiastic conductor. The result was a pleasant shady, picnic day on the green banks of Lake Burley Griffin.

GoSeeAustralia’s Managing Director, Graham Wallace, (pictured above) took the opportunity to chat with the Governor General about Australian caravanning’s huge growth and the strong links which have been forged by GSA with Tourism Australian through coverage of the recent Australian Tourism Awards.

Lisa meets Governor General JefferyLisa Morrison (pictured right) came from Melbourne for the event and told GSA that meeting the Governor General had given her a much better appreciation of the Vice Regal role.

Through it all the local Lions Club soldiered on, their barbecue catering for hundreds of hungry mouths.

The Open Day donation from Government House visitors aids the Smith Family.

Given the huge interest in how the Governor General lives it was a good day for The Smith Family too.
