Leisurefest attracts younger Australians as they head for the outdoors

The Caravan and Camping Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse in the Melbourne suburb of Springvale shows the extent of the massive growth in interest in getting out into the outdoors which is now a rite of passage with Australia's socially cashed up economic demographic - the extended family.

Day one attendance was up 45%  by 1064 to 6635. Day two up 21% to 9262.  Show Organiser Peter Wright said today 24,756 show goers effectively " added an extra day" to the Leisurefest impact. He said  marketing aimed at the family brought a younger group of show goers  from last Friday, the final day of the Victorian school holidays.

Melbourne European RV's which sell the Adria, Geist, Hymer range of caravans had a quirky retro caravan, and a 5th wheeler which ran behind a Mazda BT50.

The BT50 is an interesting towing proposition which serious pulling power. The dollars are not too high for the level of vehicle. About $47,000 will put a turbo diesel in front of up to 3000kg and according to Aub at Melbourne European make a smooth job of moving the load.

We have now tried an Adria caravan and can report that the mechanical brake system is excellent and we could not wrong-foot the built-in anti-sway tow-head which is common to Adria, Geist and Hymer products.

The bottom line is the European builders have products which are well engineered for easy, safe use in the Australian Recreational Vehicle market.

We have a feature almost ready to post on setting up a Jayco Destiny Outback caravan behind a new Holden Captiva diesel.  The feature will include  GoSee member access to full professional towing weight and equipment information. Our design team have created an online system which is aimed at people who have no experience with caravanning.

Hayman Reese provided their computer weighing equipment and expertise. We now know that 1700kg is the maximum caravan weight to tow behind the Captiva.

At Leisurefest Jayco had some fine examples of the strong Destiny Outback. It allowed show goers to make their own decisions about the layout which suits bests.

Windsor is across that need and their popular Rapid had big labels which pointed to the exact purpose of each design configuration.

Leisurefest Organiser Peter Wright says caravan, camping, Recreational Vehicle, 5th wheelers, campers, campervans and tents are  now front of  mind for an outdoor  orientated group of Australians. The recent run of Caravanning Supershows in all states of Australia played to record crowds, he said.

The next caravanning cab off the rank is the Recreational Vehicle and Camping Leisurefest at Bendigo Racecourse from November 23 to 25. Exhibitors have  picked up on the public interest in getting out there and putting some quality space into their lives so already there is a run on available sites for Bendigo.

Then it is  back into the Supershow circuit again with the Caulfield Supershow from April 23 to 28.

Here in pictures is the latest from Sandown Leisurefests extensive industry displays.

We  have compiled a  gallery of  pictures from the new and unusual offerings which was shown at  Leisurefest.
