At 100,000 RVs Jayco cements place as biggest Australian builder

With 100,000 Recreational Vehicles now built and sold Jayco is now the biggest manufacturer in the history of the Australian Recreational Vehicle industry.

Jayco employs some 630 people at its new national headquarters and manufacturing complex at Dandenong in Victoria. It started out with eight employees in an old farm shed on Melbourne’s outskirts in 1975.

“This is an important milestone for all of us here at Jayco, and one we take great pride in,” Jayco’s founder and managing director, Gerry Ryan said today.

Jayco’s 100,000th caravan - a Destiny pop-top - was bought by retired Telstra designer Garry Wright and his wife Dianne, of the outer south western Sydney suburb of Narellan. The Wrights have been caravanning for more than 10 years and their new van replaces the Jayco Freedom pop-top caravan they have had for the past five years.

“We were in the market for something a bit bigger and with the latest mod cons,” Garry Wright said.

The Wrights  plan do the ‘big lap’ around Australia late next year with their new Jayco.

“For us, there’s no better way to travel. Having your own van means you can decide your own itinerary and set your own pace. You’re not dependent on others and you can do your own thing,” Garry Wright said. Dianne Wright says says - “I just love the lifestyle, it’s so relaxed”.

As for being the owners of Jayco’s 100,000th c aravan, the Wrights said they are delighted to be a part of the company’s history.

“I guess we’re a bit biased, but we like and trust their product and after-sales service. They build good quality caravans and sell them at a reasonable price. An added bonus is, Jayco caravans hold their value,” Garry Wright said.

The Destiny pop-top caravan was recently handed over to the Wrights - along with a special gift pack - by Jayco Sydney principal David Carrick, at his St Mary’s dealership, one of the biggest recreational vehicle retailers in NSW.

David Carrick congratulated the Wrights on becoming the proud owners of the 100,000th Jayco and wished them many safe and enjoyable holidays in the years ahead.

He also thanked them for their custom and loyalty, and on behalf of Gerry Ryan, invited them to attend the official opening of Jayco’s new national headquarters and manufacturing complex which will take place early next year.

Caravanning and camping continues to be one of the fastest growing segments in the Australian tourism industry.

In 2006, some 46 million visitor nights were spent in tourist parks and camping grounds across the country, with NSW accounting for around a third of the total. It is estimated that these visitors spent some $6.5 billion nation-wide, with much of the expenditure occurring in regional areas.

Editor's Note: We bought a Jayco 23' Heritage as our home away from home. It is the second Jayco GoSee has owned. As Jayco has the lions share of the Australian market we do a lot of work with their products here are some pictures from recent editorial features. Editor's Note also see:
