Noel Guthrie of the Trans-Tasman caravan Park chain Family Parks is the winner of the Eric Hayman Award for Excellence. The awards key criteria demands that the recipient makes a contribution which is a national service to the Australian caravan, camping and tourism industry.

Gus, as he is known to industry colleagues, more than meets the awards demanding criteria. His contribution includes leading Family Parks from 45 caravans parks to more than 200 in Australia and New Zealand.

For Gus (your correspondent has rarely heard his christening name Noel used) the satisfaction of this success is based in effort which started as a labour of love and grew under the Guthrie touch.

It is a popular choice among industry colleagues. A totally surprised Guthrie got a standing ovation as he stepped up to receive the award from Jim Hayman who presented the plaque which honours his father. Eric Hayman was President of the CTIA (Victoria) for 17 years and also president of the Caravan and Recreational Vehicle Council of Australia.

On Guthrie's watch Family Parks in Australia and New Zealand is now a major force in providing popular touring services as it commits to family atmosphere, quality service and facilities, enjoyable holidays and discounts for Family Parks members to reward their loyalty. The Guthrie touch shows in three other key drivers - timing, price and a fit with what the caravanning market wants.

The Family parks chain is the most pet friendly in Australia. In New Zealand Himatangi Beach Holiday Park won the AA Most Hospitable Holiday Park Experience Award last year to continue Family Parks hospitality dominance after Bowentown Beach Holiday Park won in 2006. Himatangi Beach Holiday Park was a Most Hospitable Award finalist in 2005.

The Most Hospitable award is decided on public response, people have to want to show their appreciation of the effort Holiday Parks put into making their New Zealand holiday stay memorable. It is a case of most forms sent in wins which underlines the demand for the accommodation services, level and market timing which Guthrie and the Family Parks board have in place.
