At excited 4 star Dalrymple Tourist Van Park there are no strangers, only friends you haven't met

Around the campfire at Dalrymple
Tourist Van Park is a great
place to kick back

Don and Gayle Peters are really excited today.

They are resident owners at Dalrymple Tourist Van Park at Charters Towers Queensland.

They are friends of ours from way back so Gayle called to give GoSee the 4 star good word – “We are wonderful here”, she said. “We had our AAA assessment and we are upgraded to a 4 star caravan park!!"

"We’re pretty happy with that, all our sweat and $ is paying off!"

Dalrymple’s cabins were assessed too and earned a 3.5 star rating

The !!!! exclamations give some feeling for Gayle’s enthusiasm and GoSee is happy to report when hard working Parkies enjoy success.

When they purchased Dalrymple recently it was 3 ½ star.

After last seasons peak period (winter down south in Australia) they closed off half of the park for renovations. It’s just now been re-opened and the visitors love it

Don and Gayle really put in to lift Dalrymple.

They first dug out all of the old roads and installed kerb and channeling, filled with road base, packed and topped with gravel and achieved a result which looks better than bitumen.

They grassed all of the  caravan park's sites, not just campsites (actually almost 2000 sq metres of turf).

Lucky Dalrymple Tourist Van Park has an ample supply of bore water.

They painted all taps, sullage pits, powerheads and poles to make them look better and also to improve OH&S (so people can see them).

They painted amenities and replaced taps, towel rails and hooks.

Wireless internet and internet kiosk were introduced.

The first half hour of wireless broadband access is free.

All trees were trimmed by the Tree Doctor.

All gardens were trimmed, pruned and now show that someone cares.

For added fun for young and older they Installed a jumping pillow.

Amenities are spotless.

The accommodation includes ensuited fully self-contained cabins.

There are grass and slab powered sites for caravans, camper trailers, fifth wheelers and motor homes.

There is a large camping area. The saltwater pool has a children's wading area. There is a wood fired, cedar lined Sauna.

The covered camp kitchen is big enough for gatherings and barbecues. The caravan park has additional barbecues. There is a kiosk.

Tourist information is available as are gas refills. There is a dump point.

Dalrymple also has wheelchair accessible amenities. There is plenty of room for large rigs on six acres of landscaped, shaded grounds.

Dalrymple organises social events throughout the winter season, including Aussie Devonshire teas and evening outback campfires.

Lifting Dalrymple Tourist Van Park to 4 star rating was a lot of work, but it really freshened up Dalrymple Tourist Van Park and made it much more attractive.

GoSee believes it is good for our website users to know about proactive Parkies who are prepared to take the time and effort to provide better accommodation and services for travellers.

Don and Gayle’s 4 star success shows that they will go the extra lap for their guests to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

In October 2005 Gayle and Don won the Best Tourist and Caravan Park Award at the Outback Queensland Tourism Awards.

Don and Gayle made hospitality at the park they ran then - Sunset Top Tourist Park a full-time experience throughout guests stays and worked to provide them with a memorable time in Mount Isa.

At the time Communications and Membership Manager for Outback Queensland Tourism, Rebecca Smith , told GoSeeAustralia, “Don and Gayle Peters have done a fabulous job at the Sunset Top Tourist Park since taking it over in 2004”.

Their 4 star upgrade at Dalrymple Tourist Van Park  shows they have not lost their commitment to improvement just relocated it to Charters Towers.

Charters Towers is mining history -

29 crushing mills, 65 hotels and its own Stock Exchange made it the second largest city in Queensland with a population of 30,000 back in the early 1900s.

Century old architecture and heritage landscapes combined with modern day facilities.

The National Trust of Queensland along with the City and Shire Councils play a leading role in the preservation of the historical aspects of Charters Towers. Historically significant sites have been linked into a trail called “Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail”.

These include – Ghosts, the Venus Battery.
Grandeur, One Square Mile- The elegance and grandeur of the city heart, Gold, Towers Hill. This site, where gold was first discovered in 1871, rises 420 feet above the plain.

Greed is the Stock Exchange. Built in 1888, the Royal Arcade housed the Charters Towers Stock Exchange, one of Australia’s few regional stock exchanges. World Theatre is a cultural complex where the unique blend of heritage architecture and state of the art technology meet.

There is also the Historic Ambulance Centre, Miners Cottage, Charters Towers Museum and the Pioneer Cemetery.

Excelsior Library is the home of the Charters Towers and Dalrymple Archive Group who are an active group continually gathering and uncovering the golden past.

Other attractions include Burdekin Weir and the authentic country experience of the Cattle Sales.

Then there is the Civic Club. Originally known as the Londoner’s Club (a gentleman’s club) it boasts two 100 year old billiards tables.

The 50s and 60s can be visited with a night at one of only six drive-in theatres still operating in Queensland.

Lissner, Defiance Mill and Centenary Park are ideal for a picnic or a shady, leisurely stroll.

On the Australia Day long weekend each year, Charters Towers hosts “The Goldfield Ashes”, the largest amateur cricket carnival in the Southern Hemisphere. Teams range from the serious A graders to the madcap social events.

Ten Days in the Towers is a week of fun and festivities leading up to the Country Music Festival, a weekend of performances by the top country music stars, cabarets and jamborees.

Throughout the week visitors enjoy line dancing, listen to bush poets and talent quests and watch the grand procession. It is falls in the week before the "May Day" long weekend.

Charters Towers Agricultural Show features a large beef cattle section, equestrian events, local arts & crafts, fruit & vegetables, poultry & pigeons, cooking and plants. It is held in late July.

The Restorer's Club Annual Swap Meet and Motor Show is a must see event for all car buffs.

A vast array of vintage cars and machinery is on display during the Queens Birthday long weekend. Another annual event not to be missed by car buffs is the Ute Muster, held in late April.

Markets- Local arts and crafts can be purchased at the Stock Exchange Markets (first & third Sundays monthly) and the Showgrounds Markets (every second Sunday monthly).

Many other sporting events are regularly held in Charters Towers including BMX, Motocross, horse racing, equestrian, netball, rugby league, soccer, cricket, golf, pistol shooting, rugby union, squash, tennis, swimming, cycling, bow hunters, and touch football.

Charters Towers is home to five quality boarding schools which provide a strong education base for Queensland children. Some of the schools and their accommodation houses are stately heritage buildings.

Touring in the area should include the historic towns of Pentland, Homestead and Ravenswood.

Picnic at picturesque Fletcher Creek, bushwalk in White Mountains National Park, visit the Basalt Wall or Big Bend and enjoy the mighty Burdekin River Dam and Weir. Try your luck fishing for a barramundi or just enjoy boating and picnicking.

Dalrymple Tourist Van Park is on the northern entrance to Charters Towers, on the Lynd Highway, 1.8 km north of the Information Centre and city centre.

Charters Towers is at the junction of the Lynd Highway (from Undarra Lava Tubes to Charters Towers), Flinders Highway (from Tennant Creek to Townsville) and the Gregory Developmental Road (from Emerald to Lynd Junction); all are links across our great Aussie outback.
