Destination Rotorua, the Rotorua District Council website reports today that - Some of the people affected by the recent Australian bush fires are visiting Rotorua this week, courtesy of local radio station, More FM, and Rotorua District Council's tourism arm, Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing (DRTM).

The visitors arrive today (Thursday 9 July) and will be in town until July 14. DRTM has arranged accommodation and a range of activities for the group.

Local hotels, motels and transport and tourism operators have come on board offering free or discounted services, and several restaurants are providing discounted meals.

The project was initiated by More FM following extensive New Zealand coverage of the Victorian bush fires.

“Everyone has been affected by this tragedy, including many Rotorua residents,” MediaWorks Rotorua operations manager Paul Hickey says.

“We believe this appeal provides an opportunity for locals to show how caring our community is, by reaching out to some of the victims of this tragedy.”

Editors Note: GoSee drove through the Kinglake area in Victoria, Australia five months after the fire storm.

Here are impressions of winter in the hills after the bushfires.
