Pyrenees Escapade allows serious European wine and food indulgences

European wine and food lovers can indulge at the second annual Pyrenees Escapade to be held at the Avoca Turf Club Function Centre on Sunday, October 31 from 11am to 4pm.

About 20 winemakers from the historical Pyrenees wine region will showcase their red, white and sparkling wines at a rustic European-style ‘village square’, alongside boutique breweries and locally grown produce like olives and olive oil, preserves, sauces, pastes and verjuice.

Sponsored by the Pyrenees Grapegrowers and Winemakers Association, Pyrenees Shire Council and Tourism Victoria, the event will be heavenly for serious wine lovers, says President David Robson.

“This year there will be an exclusive European Masterclass where participants will have the unique opportunity to taste, compare and discuss a selection of award-winning Pyrenees wines alongside French wines, including several from the 200 year-old M.Chapoutier Winery in the Rhone Valley,” he said.

“With M. Chapoutier Australia recently purchasing two vineyards in the Pyrenees, the Masterclass will be a fantastic way for wine enthusiasts to meet the Australian representative of this world-renowned vigneron alongside our own local winemaking experts.”

Mr Robson said that a Wine Options Challenge was another event draw-card where discerning wine enthusiasts could test their skills at identifying a selected wine.

“The esteemed Pyrenees wine making region has an abundance of exceptional wine and food, and this event will be the perfect destination for city dwellers wanting to escape the Melbourne Cup madness and for locals to indulge in their local produce,” he said.

In addition to wine tastings and sales, several wineries will offer delicious $10 tasting plates on the day. Entertainment includes a wandering minstrel, petanque and musical performances.

Entry is $20 per person and includes carry bag and wine tasting glass for free wine tastings. For more information or to book online, go to www.pyrenees.org.au or call 0408 414 660. Tickets to the European Masterclass are $40 per person and places are strictly limited.

Being Moonambel’s 150th birthday that same weekend, the Pyrenees will literally go off with a bang, with fireworks to be held at Moonambel Recreation Reserve on Saturday, October 30 from 4pm, as well as live theatre and family fun.

Local wineries will continue the party on Monday, November 1 with several cellar doors offering special events like a French brunch and new release tastings. To mark the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup, the Avoca Turf Club is planning a race day on Tuesday, November 2, where entertainment, including traditional games and a re-enactment of how punters arrived at the country races 150 years ago, will start from 11am.
