Around Australia by the book

Bruce Campbell, AM, Senior Australian of the Year 2003, knows a thing or three about the Outback.

He was Founder and Chairman – 2002 and 2006 for the Year of the Outback promotion and Chairman of Australian Outback Development Consortium.
So when he stood up to launch a book called “Around Australia – the ultimate guide to the ultimate trip” it is a given that he believes the book has what it takes to give the Outback a fair go.

With Peter Davis, of Hema Maps, acting as MC, Bruce Campbell launched the book written by Evon Anderson at the Victorian Caravan and Camping Show at Caulfield Racecourse in April.

“If you asked 1000 people to define the Outback you would get a different meaning from each of them and you would get 1000 different answers. It is a powerful, underestimated resource”, he said.

The words in the 464 pages of Around Australia come from Evon. They cover the many wonders that people miss on their first encounter with Australia.
It really is better the second, third, or fourth time or more around.

The book has been created by users for users. Evon and her husband Peter regard the publication as a “labour of love”. “We have an interest in travel and we love to see things and understand them. It is an incredible book which includes Hema’s 2005 sixth edition Road Atlas”, Peter said.

So walks, National Parks, roads and their condition, handy hints, rest areas, fuel stops, camp sites and things to do in every state and territory fill the  book which took two years and four days to write.

Evon Anderson paid tribute to her husband of 38 years, for the photos he has contributed to the publication, and to Hema, “I am so glad we joined forces”, she said.

The books sound travel information is notably effective as the experiences are linked to destinations and approached via the relevant roads, linked to the extensive range of maps. This is a high benefit as it avoids the potential confusion which is created by a Regional approach to information when the user is not familiar with the Region names and locations.

The whole approach from Evon and Peter is practical. Topics extend to the pros and cons of choosing a Recreational Vehicle, National Parks indexing, towing basics and a list of public waste water dumping points for the states and territories.

This list does not include caravan park facilities which are not available to the general public. Its limitations are a wake-up call if it is viewed against demand growth analysis projections for campervans and motorhomes by 2011.

The book can be purchased from all leading book stores - $49.95 hard cover, $39.95 soft cover
