First in - GoSee tries Holdens 2.8lt turbo diesel 4x4 Colorado LTZ crew cab pickup 5 speed manual
New Colorado LTZ Crew Cab
About a month out from its Australian launch GoSee test drove the top of range model 2.8lt Turbo Diesel 4x4 Colorado LTZ Crew Cab Pickup in 5 speed manual form today. Only one vehicle has been provided to dealerships for demo purposes and GoSee's Pam and Alan spent some time with a design Holden hopes will grab a big market share from Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and the Ford Ranger. The new Colorado will be available to the public in mid to late May.
All Colorado models powered by the 132kW 2.8-litre diesel powertrain will have a maximum rated towing capacity of 3.5-tonne, while the new 4x2 DX Single Cab featuring Holden’s 110kW 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine has a three-tonne towing capacity.
17 inch wheels
Holden offers a six-speed automatic transmission as a $2,000 option on every model except the entry level DX cab chassis, which is available with a 5-speed manual transmission only.
The Colorado has a comprehensive array of safety features with Electronic Stability Control, ABS, driver and front passenger airbags and side curtain airbags standard across the range.
GoSee was accompanied by dealership staff so we were limited to their pre-planned route. Despite this GoSee has first impressions from both the female and male driver points of view.
First impressions – (Alan) heaps of power, no turbo lag, quiet, spacious, a bit costly with options.
(Pam) Very nice, smooth manual gear change, more comfortable than previous model, didn’t drive like a truck. The Colorado travels smoothly and feels like a large car. Both Pam and Alan feel the 6-speed auto will be great.
Pam impressed the Holden man with her skills in handling a manual tradie tow tug like the Colorado 2.8lt Turbo Diesel 4x4 Colorado LTZ Crew Cab Pickup.
As her driving experience includes towing caravans further than most men plus 4WD adventures in far places, including the Canning Stock Route, we are impressed that all he got for his comment was a smile.
Editors Note: GoSee has been told by industry sources that Holden found that the high gearing of previous manual Colorado models made them prone to clutch problems. To overcome that, the power and torque ratios for the new 5 speed manuals have been changed.
High Ride rear view
Similar comments have been made to GoSee by industry sources about the manual Mitsubishi Triton. GoSee wonders whether driver skill levels are a contribution factor, particularly when a heavy trailer, caravan, horse float or boat is being reversed.
Slipping the clutch can do bad things quickly in that situation. Add an uphill slope and clutch slipping drivers are setting fire to their wallets.
Holden use Hayman Reese towbars and the popular Hayman Reese towing Weight Distribution Hitch is an acceptable accessory for towing.
The Colorado maximum ball weight is the normal caravan industry accepted 10 percent of the maximum 3.5 tonne towing capacity for the 2.8lt powered Colorado.
The price for LTZ Auto Crew Cab Pickup on the road is $54,335 including launch specials. Price for LTZ Auto Space Cab Pick Up is $51,835 with special offers. Holden says the expect 80 percent of their sales will be automatic vehicles.
The Colorado GoSee tried included mud flaps, 17” alloy wheels and side steps.
Optional items discussed included: leather interior, reversing sensors, reversing camera, GPS, tub liner, tonneau cover, alum. bars in rear.
The new model starts at at $26,990 for the DX 4x2 tradies' special.

Body styles - available in 4x2 as well as 4x4 configurations - are single cab, space cab and four-door crew cab.
The entry-level DX model gets a 2.5-litre, 110kW turbo-diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
All other models get a more powerful 2.8-litre, 132kW turbo-diesel with a choice of five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission - the same auto found in V8 Commodores.
All spec levels get aircon, Bluetooth connectivity and an iPod-compatible sound system.
Colorado's standard safety kit of dual front airbags, curtain airbags, ESC and ABS put it ahead of the best-selling Hilux. Two new turbo-diesel engines will be offered, but no petrol engines.
