GoSee finds significant advance in apnea camping options from CPAP technology

GoSee has been trialling significant advances in portable sleep apnea Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines in our latest Jayco Sterling 23ft caravan.

Doctors regard apneas or partial cessations of breathing during sleep significant if they last at least 10 seconds, although they usually last for 20 to 30 seconds and can last for more than a minute. A large proportion of Australians with OSA remain undiagnosed and untreated.

GoSee had an extra powerpoint add to the caravan close to the bed, with an inverter moved from a previous caravan for use when camping on unpowered campsites.

The GoSee on road evaluation has tried the DeVilbiss Intellipap Sleepcube auto adjust DV5H11 model from Sleepzone. GoSee did a similar evaluation in 2006 when Don Fischer of Sleepzone www.sleepzone.com.au came up with a highly portable solution to the twin problems for apnea patients of 'Rain Out' and reliable 12 volt equipment which virtually removed reliance on 240 volt power supply.

Rain Out causes the humified air to condense in the breathing tube producing a rude awakening with a nose full of water. Don Fischer of Sleepzone came up with a unique heated breathing tube to end the problem.

SleepZone, based in Goulburn, in southeastern NSW is an accredited distributors for DeVilbiss Healthcare manufacturers of the DeVilbiss SleepCube range of CPAP's and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.

Don Fischer of Sleepzone says DeVilbiss Healthcare manufactures and supplies a range of devices to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

In OSA the upper part of the air passage behind the tongue, narrows and collapses during sleep causing an interruption to breathing. DeVilbiss Healthcare offers a full line of CPAP systems including standard CPAP, bilevel and autoadjust models.

The technically advanced IntelliPAP product portfolio is noteable for its exceptionally quiet operation, reliability, small size and ease of use. The $1295 DeVilbiss Intellipap Sleepcube auto adjust DV5H11 model price includes a heated CPAP tube supplied by Sleepzone.

The DeVilbiss SleepCube 'Auto Plus' is the first automatic CPAP on the market with instant touchpad and wireless recovery data direct from the DeVilbiss Smartcode Website ( no software or data cards are needed ). This allows easy compliance checks and event detection with CPAP treatment.

The SleepCube is designed for camping, caravans and other Recreational Vehicle CPAP situations. It has a 110-240VAC & 12VDC auto-switching power supply built in.

Editors Note: SNORE Australia reports that it is difficult to specify exactly how many Australians suffer from OSA. It is generally thought however that around 9 percent of women and 25 percent of men in Australia have clinically significant OSA and that 4 percent of men and women have symptomatic OSA.

The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in Australia is probably increasing due to the 'obesity epidemic'.

Despite this, a large proportion of Australians with OSA remain undiagnosed and untreated.

SNORE Australia is one of Australia's largest groups of sleep disorders centres.

Sleep Disorders Australia says CPAP machines need to be calibrated to each individual’s prescription. If you purchase a second-hand machine, it MUST be taken to a supplier with a copy of your prescription to ensure the settings are properly adjusted.

Sleep Disorders Australia is a voluntary organisation with branches in each State, providing information and support to sufferers of sleep disorders and their families.

The signs and symptoms of OSA are wide and varied. Some OSA sufferers do not exhibit all of the symptoms, however they will usually experience one or more of the following:
  • Snoring.
  • Episodes of gasping, snorting or choking during sleep.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue or lethargy.
  • Lack of energy and endurance.
  • Falling asleep or needing to have a nap during the day.
  • Disturbed or restless sleep (OSA sometimes causes insomnia).
  • Poor memory and concentration.
  • Morning headaches.
  • Dry mouth or sore throat upon waking.
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety, mood and behaviour changes (including ADHD in children).
  • Increased frequency of urination during the night.
  • Rapid weight gain or difficulty in losing weight.
