Caravan, RV and Accommodation Industry of Australia Ltd (CRVA) is targetting children with a 12-week caravan and camping adventure which went to air on Channel Eleven's Toasted TV on March 18. Toasted TV promotes kids involvement with three hours of entertainment each morning seven days a week from 6am.

CRVA says the kid’s TV program reach averages 367,000 people each week and includes 140,000 kids. Toasted TV reaches 98,000 5-12s, who spend an average of one hour 31 minutes watching. It also reaches 53,000 12-17s, who spend an average of one hour 46 minutes watching.

CRVA says 56 percent of children make decisions or decide with parents when it comes to holidays.

In conjunction with TV, CRVA has also launched a new website and a Facebook page - Camping for Kids. Camping for kids encourages a lifestyle of learning, playing and making new friends all while keeping active and healthy.

The Camping for Kids website will act as an information and activity hub with an online game and colour-in pages dedicated to promoting the camping lifestyle to the children’s market (children under the age of 18 years).

Former Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson, said that there was good growth in Domestic tourism in 2012 with a strong Domestic quarter for overnight travel.

Nights spent in caravan and camping accommodation increased 10 per cent and rented accommodation increased six per cent.

“Domestic day travel also grew strongly in 2012 with trips up eight per cent to 174 million and day trip expenditure increasing 11 per cent to $18.2 billion,” he said.

Domestic overnight travel is up eight per cent to 174 million and day trip expenditure increasing 11 per cent to $18.2 billion.”

Leading the growth in Domestic travel was the Northern Territory with an 11 per cent increase in overnight trips, the Australian Capital Territory with a nine per cent increase, and WA recording eight per cent growth.

Intrastate trips - or travel within Australian’s own state - increased by five per cent and intrastate visitor nights by six per cent. Interstate travel showed some improvement in the December quarter after a relatively flat year. Caravan, RV & Accommodation Industry of Australia Ltd (CRVA) CEO Stuart Lamont said that the strong growth in the Caravanning & Holiday Parks Industry is a result of Australian’s looking to get better value out of their holidays.

“The Caravanning and Holiday Park Industry provides some of the most affordable holiday options in Australia not to mention the many lifestyle and health benefits that people get out of this type of holiday”, Stuart Lamont said.

“It’s the freedom from daily routines that is so appealing about a caravan and camping holiday.”

“Caravanning and camping promotes Australians holidaying at home, and offers one of the best value holiday options in Australia today, in many cases supporting regional communities due to the locations of caravan holiday parks, and the nature of caravanning and camping.”

Domestic visitors within the caravanning and camping sector in 2012 totalled 9.467 million (5.837 million in caravan parks, 3.630 million not) resulting in a total of 13 percent of the total Domestic tourism visitor numbers. These visitors accounted for 43.5 million overnight stays (30.314 million in parks, 13.186 million not) or 16 percent of the total nights spent by Domestic tourists.
