CRVA compliance workshop agrees safety issues must stop at factory door

The caravanning industry needs to come together and find a solution to managing Recreational Vehicle safety and compliance in Australia a CRVA compliance workshop agreed today.

The nationally representative industry workshop at the Caravan and Recreational Vehicle and Accommodation Industry of Australia (CRVA) conference on the Gold Coast today agreed that "harmonising" a solution to take to government for implimentation is essential.

"This is key", CRVA CEO Stuart Lamont, who faciliated the compliance workshop, told industry delegates from all states. The problem needs to be stopped at the factory door the workshop agreed.

Compliance requirements are not being checked and implimented at appropriate levels, the delegates said.

GVM, ATM and Tare ratings are not understood at the levels RV buyers deserve and the lack of education is reflecting badly on builders who are committed to produce safe, quality vehicles.

Stuart Lamont said the industry is absolutely committed to cleaning up its act.

The recently revamped Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers Association (RVMA) is now "toughening up" but is limited in checking member compliance through lack of resources.

"We are a self-regulating industry which is not self-regulating", Ben Binns of RVMA and AVIDA RV's said. "We need to put the rules together and then go to government", he said.

The RVMA is a compliance requirements resource for its members, but the practical challenge is to communicate with the trade.

In essence a positive outcome for committed industry and RV buyers throughout Australia comes down to how non-compliance issue are administered.

RVM Australia, the peak body for Australia’s RV manufacturing industry, has set a new benchmark for product compliance with the launch of the RV Manufacturing Accreditation Program (RVMAP). RVMAP is designed to give RVM Australia members everything they need to keep abreast of regulations, ensure they are compliant, and document the compliance of every vehicle they build.

A compliance lever  is already in place and is being applied through major state caravan and camping shows.

Compliance is the control. Non-compliance means no welcome for would-be exhibitors. GoSee has seen this work well in South Australia and Victoria at the relevant caravan and camping supershows.

But at this point hard evidence of non-compliance issues is in short supply. For example tales of product being built without the windows sealed have no value at government submission level unless they can be proved.
