Jeep shifts new Grand Cherokee into 8-gear auto
Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
A new eight-speed transmission now drives the entire Grand Cherokee range, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions while improving acceleration, enabling smoother and faster gear shifting, and enhancing the on- and off-road driving experience.
The new Grand Cherokee range will go on sale to the Australian market during July 2013, with a starting price of $43,000 for the new Laredo 4x2 model. The top of the range Overland 3 litre diesel has a suggested retail price of $71,000.
A new eight-speed automatic transmission is the headline feature of the new Grand Cherokee range and is fitted across the entire model line-up, pairing with both the 3.0-litre diesel and 3.6-litre petrol V6 engines, as well as both V8 engine offerings.
The main touch point for the new eight speed transmission is a new electronic T-handle shifter, which provides flexibility for the driver to choose between Drive and Sport transmission shift schedules via the T-handle.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in Laredo, Limited, Overland and SRT specification levels, with the Laredo grade now offering 4x2 and 4x4 variants for the first time.
The new Grand Cherokee offers some of the most advanced safety features available, including updated Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation and all-new Selec-Speed Control.
Jeep capability comes courtesy of three four-wheel drive systems – Quadra-Trac II, Quadra-Drive II and the SRT-exclusive Quadra-Trac – the Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension and the Selec-Terrain and Selec-Track traction management systems.
“With the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, we’ve taken one of the industry’s most highly acclaimed SUVs and elevated it to an even higher level,” Veronica Johns, President and CEO Fiat Chrysler Group Australia said.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee range offers a choice of four key powertrains: the three-time Ward’s 10 Best Engines-winning 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, the efficient 3.0-litre direct-injection common rail turbo diesel V6, the legendary 5.7-litre V8 and the powerful 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine that powers the high-performance SRT model.
All petrol engines available on the new Grand Cherokee meet Euro 6 emission standards.
3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 engine
The new Grand Cherokee is available with the latest iteration of the efficient 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 engine, which now produces maximum power of 184 kW at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 570 Nm at 2,000 rpm, which is 20 Nm more than the previous model and accessible almost 30 per cent lower in the rev range (previously 550 Nm at 2,800 rpm).
Combined with the new eight-speed transmission, fuel economy for the combined cycle is 7.5 L/100km, which represents a 10 per cent improvement in comparison to the previous model, despite the increases in power and torque.
Compact and lightweight, the 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine features a 1,800-bar common-rail fuel injection system, a compressed graphite iron 60-degree block with aluminium cylinder heads and a two-piece structural aluminium oil pan.
The cylinder heads are constructed of aluminium and feature a chain-driven, dual overhead-camshaft design with four valves per cylinder, while cast-iron exhaust manifolds have been utilised.
Additional emissions controls include a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst and standard diesel particulate filter. Euro 5+ emissions are met through an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system that includes an EGR valve with DC motor and a high-performance EGR cooler with bypass valve.
The new Uconnect with 8.4-inch touchscreen and satellite navigation (Uconnect 8.4N) is standard on Grand Cherokee Limited, Overland and SRT models. Uconnect with 8.4-inch touchscreen (Uconnect 8.4) is standard on Laredo 4x4 models, while the new entry-level Laredo 4x2 model is equipped with a new Uconnect 5.0-inch touchscreen display system (Uconnect 5.0).
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers three distinct 4x4 systems: Quadra-Trac II, Quadra-Drive II with rear Electronic Limited Slip Differential (ELSD) and the exclusive-to-SRT, Quadra-Trac active on-demand four-wheel-drive system, also featuring rear ELSD.
Quadra-Lift air suspension, which is standard on Overland and optional on Laredo and Limited models, enables the ride height of the Grand Cherokee to be raised to a maximum ground clearance of 287 mm.
In addition to its standard safety equipment, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Electronic Rollover Mitigation (ERM), ABS with off-road calibration, Brake Traction Control System (BTCS) and seven airbags (advanced multi-stage driver and front passenger, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags for front and rear occupants, driver knee airbag), the new Grand Cherokee offers upgraded Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, ParkView rear back up camera with dynamic grid, ParkSense park assist system and new Selec-Speed Control with Hill Ascent Control and Hill Descent Control, assisting the driver when climbing and descending steep grades.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): This system decreases the vehicle’s pre-set cruise-control speed when closing in on another vehicle in the same lane, or when another vehicle pulls into the same lane. ACC will accelerate to the pre-set speed when the vehicle in front speeds up or moves into another lane.
The system will also maintain a driver adjustable distance between the vehicle and the one in front of it and is particularly useful when driving in adverse meteorological conditions or in situations of reduced visibility. On the Overland and SRT models, ACC is included in the standard Advanced Safety Technology Group.
