The Caravan Industry Association of Victoria (CIA) has donated $5,000 to UnitingCare Wodonga’s emergency relief program on behalf of the annual Border RV & Camping Expo.

The donation continues a tradition established by the CIA at its Wodonga and Bendigo shows for making annual donations to local charities which now total $70,000.

CIA Chief Executive Officer, Robert Lucas, said the association was delighted to support UnitingCare’s work to help people cope with financial emergencies.

“UnitingCare Wodonga is the lead agency for emergency relief in Wodonga, and our contribution will help with the day-to-day costs of the program,” he said.

“There are some 300 people a day in this area who wouldn’t eat properly if not for this program, and we are delighted to support to this vital work.”

The program provides food parcels and food vouchers, and limited financial support for such things as medical, pharmaceutical and back-to-school costs.

It also offers debt management counselling, access to other UnitingCare and government assistance, and can make small no-interest loans to cover emergency costs such as when a fridge needs replacing.

UnitingCare Wodonga Acting Chairman, Geoff Moar, said the Expo donation was a much-needed boost to the program’s continuing financial viability.

“This donation covers our overheads for several weeks, which is a valuable boost,” he said.

“We do have free rent from St Stephen’s Uniting Church, and most of our food is donated, but we still need to keep the fridges running, pay the utilities and cover administration costs.

“This is why we have launched a direct debit scheme for people to give regular donations.

“We have already signed up 25 or 30 people, mostly from the St Stephen’s congregation, and if we had 10 times this number, our future would be secure.”
