Fair Trading Commissioner pegs camping goods trader
Fair Trading Commissioner
A rogue trader supplying the camping and caravan industry has been ordered to pay $12,020 fines, costs and compensation after leaving a convoy of unhappy campers in its wake.
Bulk Imports & Exports, the registered proprietor of the business names Solar Energy Store International, Eproducts, Luxury Home Products and Chrome Campers, sells a vast array of goods including solar panels, generators, spas, regulators, invertors, camper trailers, dirt bikes, golf buggies, saunas, fridge/freezers, treadmills, awnings and other camping and caravanning equipment.
On 19 November 2013 Bulk Imports & Exports pleaded guilty in Parramatta Local Court to multiple charges, including supplying unsafe goods, making false or misleading representations as to the quality or country of origin of goods the company was selling, failing to provide goods within a reasonable time, unlicensed motor vehicle dealing and failing to comply with a previous Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT) order.
Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said on numerous occasions Fair Trading officers intervened on behalf of aggrieved consumers, only to be stoned-walled by the company.
“Consumers must then take their matter to the CTTT but Bulk Imports & Exports’ company representatives make a habit of not showing up for the hearings,” Mr Stowe said.
“Many consumers have suffered significant financial detriment as a result of this continuing course of conduct, but the days of Bulk Imports & Exports using Fair Trading and the CTTT as its free complaints handling service are over.
“If fines won’t convince the company to clean up its act we will seek injunctions in the Supreme Court to stop the company trading altogether.”
The President of the Caravan and Camping Industry Association of NSW, Theo Whitmont, congratulated Fair Trading on its successful prosecution.
“We strongly support Fair Trading’s efforts to safeguard consumers from unscrupulous traders,” Mr Whitmont said.
“As the NSW peak body for the caravan and camping industry, CCIA NSW strives to ensure that our members are acting responsibly and complying with good business practices.”
