Portarlington Mussell Festival

Plans for the 2015 Portarlington Mussel Festival are already underway and we will keep you updated as the year progresses as plans for the festival are developed. However the 2014 Festival again proved to be a fantastic event with another big crowd basking in the sunshine whilst enjoying all the festival had to offer.

An estimated record 10 ton of mussels were sold on the day with all mussel sellers, both cooked and fresh, having a bumper day. With around 100 food and drink stalls the crowd, which has been estimated at around 30,000, had a wide variety of options to eat and drink whist listening to the music being played at 5 locations throughout the festival. Portarlington is the mussel capital of Victoria, so it was a natural choice to run a mussel festival.

Tamworth Country Music Festival

While music is at the heart of the 10 day Festival, it's the fascinating combination of welcoming locals, friendly visitors, summer holiday atmosphere and non stop music that gives the place such an across the board appeal. And there is always time for meeting new friends, or old, in a cool spot in a club, pub or coffee shop.

And the music? Well you can hear every sort of country music in every sort of venue from the giant Tamworth Regional Entertainment & Conference Centre to clubs, theatres, halls and of course outdoor stages in parks like the famous Coca-Cola Concerts. Much of it is free and most is pure Australian. There is no cultural cringe in Tamworth!

Join the thousands who stroll down the city's pleasant, tree lined main thoroughfare, Peel Street, at any time during the day or in the warm evenings. Three blocks are closed to traffic over the Festival and down the entire length are buskers. Some have been coming to the same spot for years. You'll hear some of the best and worst performers in the nation! There are individuals, groups and bands, all ages, some shy, some flamboyant, playing all kinds of music. You might pause to listen to an aboriginal country rock band from Arnhem Land, while just a few metres away there's an old yodeller from Bourke, singing Slim Dusty songs, both competing for audience with a crooning kid with a blue guitar from Tasmania. And don't imagine for a moment that any of these buskers are no-hopers. Kasey Chambers, Troy Cassar-Daley and Keith Urban are just a few of the stars, who have trodden the Peel Street pavements as youngsters.

There is just so much to see and do that even after 38 years I still haven't been to everything. These days the official program lists over 2,500 individual events ranging through concerts, record launches, bush poetry, exhibitions and so on. It even includes rodeos and bull-riding in the fabulous new Equine Centre.

People often ask me whether I had ever thought that the Festival would develop into such a vast and significant event. I answer that while I can't remember our vague expectations 38 years ago, we certainly contributed enough blood, sweat and tears over the years, to make it happen! I'm proud of what we achieved and I still love every minute of it!!

Superbike World Championships

Superbike racing is all about showcasing the latest generation of high-performance four-stroke street bikes, with eight manufacturers set to battle it out for the 2015 world championship – Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati, BMW, Aprilia and EBR (Erik Buell Racing).Much more than prototype-based grand prix racing, superbikes have a greater connection to the general public, because people can see the bikes they own being punted around on some of the finest race tracks in the world, including Australia’s very own Phillip Island.

The spectacular Phillip Island has one of the highest average speeds of any circuit in the world, and in the 2010 round Italian Max Biaggi (the eventual world champion) reached 319.8km/h down the main straight on his Aprilia V-four.

The championship regulations allow four-cylinder bikes of up to 1000cc, or twins up to 1200cc.

A superbike must remain in many aspects the same as the bike that can be bought in any dealership, including the body design. To be allowed to enter the world superbike title every manufacturer must produce a minimum quantity of a bike that must also be commercially available to the general public.

The championship also has a control slick race tyre, produced by Pirelli, giving all teams access to the same specification rubber to create closer and more exciting racing than ever before.

Australian International Air Show - Avalon (Geelong Vic) 2015

AVALON 2015 will again present a unique opportunity to showcase products, technologies and services to an informed target audience and to demonstrate a marketing presence in this vibrant and vital region. High levels of economic growth and technological development have resulted in growing demand for aviation and aerospace services, products and technology, right across the spectrum from General Aviation to airlines, air forces and space.

Australia has a well-deserved reputation within the region for technological leadership in civil and military aviation. Its vast size and great distances make aviation an essential pillar of the national and regional infrastructure – domestic and international airline passenger traffic is growing, reflecting the massive growth within the Asia Pacific region.

Australia's national airline, Qantas, is an iconic aviation brand and the world's second oldest airline. Australia also supports a vibrant network of international, domestic and regional carriers, including Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Tiger Airways, and General Aviation and business operators. Apollo Bay Music Festival

Originally started by passionate members in the community as an outlet to nurture local music way back in 1992, Apollo Bay Music Festival has grown into the sought after multi genre event for all ages it is today.

Run as a not-for-profit incorporated body and unashamedly independent, the Festival has a knack of picking the best new bands and mixing them in with older.. well.. more established artists.

You can dance (or darnce), sing, bring a picnic rug and chairs, and as many kids 15 and under you can fit legally in the vehicle of your choice. There is lots of food, and local beverages available, and the beach is only a stones throw away (although stone throwing is not permitted).

Lots of big bands have played over the years. Too many to mention in fact, but the real gems are the undiscovered ones that you looked at on the program and said “I haven’t heard of any of these!” And then you danced (or darnced) along and followed them obsessively for the following year. We have lots like that…

Tickets are advertised poorly so that most of our patrons hear about us from word of mouth only. This means we get all your friends to come and new friends are only a short conversation away.

We have a skatepark right next door and lots of space on the beach which is provided for free to those who appreciate sand and fresh air.

Speaking of beaches…. Half the fun of Apollo Bay is getting there. There is no easy way, which is why it has remained a gem of a place with the Otways at its back and the Great Ocean Road and subsequent Ocean to its front. It has one of the best beginner Surf breaks in the state and is close to some more gnarly ones. It’s cafes have great food and coffee and its Bakery is something else. Leaving is even harder!

The Festival is held on the last weekend of Summer each year. The date has moved about a bit over the last 23 years and the format is always evolving but that’s Apollo Bay and we reckon February is the best time for everything festive and enjoying the warmth in the water.
If you’ve read this far you are technically committed so thank you and see you soon!

Suzi Quatro - Cairns Convention Centre, Cnr Wharf Street & Sheridan Street, Cairns 8pm

Suzi Quatro returns in January 2015 for her Final Australian Tour.

"I have been touring Australia regularly since 1974, and have lost count of how many times I have been here, but I think this tour will be number 29! It’s my second home and I love it dearly. This year I celebrated my 50th year in the business and it just felt like the right time to take my final bow. It's a daunting prospect and one I am preparing seriously for. I want this to be a night to remember in every way... tears, laughter and lots of rock and roll. This has been my life. Nobody in the world rocks as hard as the Aussies...and from me that’s what they're gonna get...foot on the gas and go. So looking forward to this tour”

Port Fairy Folk Festival

The festival site is the village of Port Fairy, four hours drive west of Melbourne along the Princes Highway. The Great Ocean Road trip takes twice as long! The main site in the village is The Festival Arena with all the big venues.

Port Fairy is an old sea-side fishing and farming village looking out to the Southern Ocean waves rolling along the south-west coast of the state of Victoria. It was along this south coast of Australia that ships sailed in the early years of immigration. Many were wrecked on the rocks. A fishing fleet still operates from the wharf on the river.
The town of Port Fairy has become a thriving year round tourism destination and is an ideal stopover for ongoing tours further west or north to The Grampians.

The main festival site is The Arena situated at the north section of Southcombe Park (shown in green right side lower) along Campbell St. . This also has the Southcombe Park camping ground. Other venues are situated around the village eg at Surf Club, Fiddlers Green & Railway Place (cnr Bank & Sackville St), Reardon Theatre, Lecture Hall, St Johns Church, St Patricks School Hall, Consolidated School Hall and others. Google maps should also help locate the several other camp grounds.

Stawell Easter Gift

The Australia Post Stawell Gift has been held in all but four years since 1878, and is one of the world’s most famous and prestigious foot races. Run on grass, athletes are handicapped according to form and ability, and start off varying marks accordingly. Runners race for glory and prize money with many more dollars working their way through the bookies ring.

The main race is the Australia Post Stawell Gift which is run over 120m up a slight gradient, and the final is traditionally held on Easter Monday. Venue Unlike the World Championships or Olympic Games which are conducted on synthetic rubber surfaces, the Australia Post Stawell Gift is run on a grass track.

For the majority of the year, Central Park in the regional town of Stawell is home to local AFL football and cricket, but at Easter time it transforms into an athletics mecca.

For the sprint events, the athletes run in lanes that are separated by lane ropes, not painted lines. The famous finish gates are one of the most iconic features of the Gift. Handicapping Runners are handicapped according to form and ability, and start off varying ‘marks’ accordingly.

For many runners, the key to success at Stawell is to beat the handicapper – meaning they may not have displayed the form they are capable of in the lead-up to the event in the hope of receiving a handicap or ‘mark’ that might make victory more achievable.

Stone the Crows Festival - Wagga Wagga at Easter

Grey Nomads don't have to be on the road full time, they don't even have to be grey, they just have to be of that age group commonly referred to as "Grey Nomads". We have set the criteria as someone who is at least half a century old - we may as well be proud of achieving that milestone! Probably if our children saw some of the things we get up to, we might be referred to as recycled teenagers. We are all young at heart even though our bodies are saying we are getting older. Don't miss the "Stone the Crows" Festival at Wagga Wagga Showgrounds. For more information email Chrissie on info@stonethecrows.com.au or visit our website.

Wangaratta Jazz & Blues Festival

Conceived by a group of locals in 1989 as a way to attract visitors and raise the profile of the town, the first Wangaratta Festival of Jazz (as it was then known) was staged in 1990, with attendances at around 2500.

Since then – with blues added to the program in 1994 – it has grown to become an internationally renowned event, attracting around 25,000 visitors, and more than 200 jazz and blues artists from the USA, the UK, Europe and Australia.

With a diverse, eclectic mix of jazz greats and rising stars, each year the program showcases jazz and blues of all styles, including original, contemporary, traditional, mainstream, experimental and improvised. A central feature remains the National Jazz Awards; a competition designed to encourage and promote young musicians.

The Festival has won numerous tourism and sponsorship awards, and is recognised internationally as the foremost jazz and blues event in Australia.
