Port Fairy Folk Festival

The festival site is the village of Port Fairy, four hours drive west of Melbourne along the Princes Highway. The Great Ocean Road trip takes twice as long! The main site in the village is The Festival Arena with all the big venues.

Port Fairy is an old sea-side fishing and farming village looking out to the Southern Ocean waves rolling along the south-west coast of the state of Victoria. It was along this south coast of Australia that ships sailed in the early years of immigration. Many were wrecked on the rocks. A fishing fleet still operates from the wharf on the river.
The town of Port Fairy has become a thriving year round tourism destination and is an ideal stopover for ongoing tours further west or north to The Grampians.

The main festival site is The Arena situated at the north section of Southcombe Park (shown in green right side lower) along Campbell St. . This also has the Southcombe Park camping ground. Other venues are situated around the village eg at Surf Club, Fiddlers Green & Railway Place (cnr Bank & Sackville St), Reardon Theatre, Lecture Hall, St Johns Church, St Patricks School Hall, Consolidated School Hall and others. Google maps should also help locate the several other camp grounds.

Horsham Country Music Festival 2015

The Horsham Country Music Association was formed in 2006 with the first monthly gig held in 2007 and the inaugural Horsham Country Music Festival held in April 2008. The 2008 and 2009 festivals were of three days duration before moving to a four day festival in 2010.

In addition to conducting an annual festival we hold monthly gigs at the Horsham RSL. We have a dinner and show on thursday night at 6.30pm which costs $30 including a two course dinner followed by Morning Melodies on friday morning at 9.30am which costs $12 including morning tea.

In 2011 the committee of Horsham Country Music Association decided to expand our activities holding night and morning shows in Warracknabeal in 2011 and 2012. Hopetoun enjoyed morning melodies in September 2012, Beulah in May 2013 and Goroke in August 2013. With attendances of around 150 at these shows the committee have agreed to continue holding morning melodies in rural towns in 2014. Minyip and Great Western were hosts to morning melodies in September and October respectively.

The 8th Horsham Country Music Festival will be held from 19th to 22nd March 2015 with another excellent artist line up. New faces in 2015 will be The Stetson Family, Brian Letton, Tracey Rains, Bill Gray, Vanessa Waara and Cynthia Lawarence while Don Costa, Johanna Hemara, Col Perkins, Sandie Dodd and Tom Maxwell will be making their second appearances. Ian Castle will be performing for the third time.

Stawell Easter Gift

The Australia Post Stawell Gift has been held in all but four years since 1878, and is one of the world’s most famous and prestigious foot races. Run on grass, athletes are handicapped according to form and ability, and start off varying marks accordingly. Runners race for glory and prize money with many more dollars working their way through the bookies ring.

The main race is the Australia Post Stawell Gift which is run over 120m up a slight gradient, and the final is traditionally held on Easter Monday. Venue Unlike the World Championships or Olympic Games which are conducted on synthetic rubber surfaces, the Australia Post Stawell Gift is run on a grass track.

For the majority of the year, Central Park in the regional town of Stawell is home to local AFL football and cricket, but at Easter time it transforms into an athletics mecca.

For the sprint events, the athletes run in lanes that are separated by lane ropes, not painted lines. The famous finish gates are one of the most iconic features of the Gift. Handicapping Runners are handicapped according to form and ability, and start off varying ‘marks’ accordingly.

For many runners, the key to success at Stawell is to beat the handicapper – meaning they may not have displayed the form they are capable of in the lead-up to the event in the hope of receiving a handicap or ‘mark’ that might make victory more achievable.

Wangaratta Jazz & Blues Festival

Conceived by a group of locals in 1989 as a way to attract visitors and raise the profile of the town, the first Wangaratta Festival of Jazz (as it was then known) was staged in 1990, with attendances at around 2500.

Since then – with blues added to the program in 1994 – it has grown to become an internationally renowned event, attracting around 25,000 visitors, and more than 200 jazz and blues artists from the USA, the UK, Europe and Australia.

With a diverse, eclectic mix of jazz greats and rising stars, each year the program showcases jazz and blues of all styles, including original, contemporary, traditional, mainstream, experimental and improvised. A central feature remains the National Jazz Awards; a competition designed to encourage and promote young musicians.

The Festival has won numerous tourism and sponsorship awards, and is recognised internationally as the foremost jazz and blues event in Australia.
