wearing in the middle is a sign of excess pressure. Do you check your tyre pressure when the tyres are cold?
having said that 40 Psi does not seem too high a pressure.
What happened when you lowered the pressure?
Have you felt the tyres when you stop to compare the heat between the rear and front tyres?
