When towing van''s you need a transmission cooler, also a Tranny Oil(ATF) Temperature Gauge as the radiator heats the ATF from 90c+ , ATF needs to run at 93c, you can do as much damage to the gearbox running it to cold as overheating it, the onboard computer governs the entire system for fuel burn, gear changes etc. so needs to know the ATF Temperature. You would be surprised what an ATF gauge tells you, & how the gearbox is cooking.
ATF is acidic & corroded in the radiator cooler in BA Falcons leaching in to the Coolant, Major repairs if that happens, so bypass into an aftermarket cooler. Some coolers bypass the ATF until it reaches operating temperature or(Thins). A fan assisted cooler is far better as you can control the temp. of the ATF. by the Temp. Gauge. When climbing you are not getting air forced into radiator, as speed is to slow. so gearbox will be overheating. When not towing you need to block air flow through cooler to get ATF up to a higher operating temperature, for better transmission performance. Towing out of overdrive is recommended. The ATF Temp range needs to be 80-93c & will fluctuate higher doing a climb. A 30-40000klm ATF cycle change & filter is a wise practice when towing.
