Tranny Temperature

Posted By:Bituman
Davo, Sounds like your Tranny is running to hot.

The Powertrain Control Module(PCM) controls everything by heat sensors, the normal operating Temperature, motor & gearbox is 85 to 100c, the Cooling Fans kick in at around 103c, and at 120c the PCM starts shutting down the Motor & gives 30sec to pull over before it cuts out, though you still have a car to drive away when it gets back to normal operating temp. Ive had that happen once on a climb, my sharp learning curve, that's why it is important having a ATF transmission oil gauge to monitor the gearbox & running it at the right temperature.

With a fan assisted oil cooler you can control the temp. It is equally bad to run the box to cold or to hot, as the whole operation of the vehicle is compromised, like more fuel, different timing etc.

The gear change thumps when to cold, and max gearbox temp is 120c, then rapid deterioration starts ATF & seals.

So Big cooler is not better, but right operating temp is best however you choose to do it, obviously the ATF will run over 93c, hence the 30000ks ATF & filter change.

When mine is climbing, the Cooling Fans(103c) come on & start of climb i switch on the Oil cooler fan, as moving slower you are not getting the thrust of air you would at 80-100kmh.

Works Well

Happy Tugging
