Located in the heart of the more rugged and spectacular Northern Flinders Ranges, the 61,000 hectare, privately owned Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary offers guests a unique outback experience. Our Advanced Ecotourism accredited Ridgetop, Waterholes and Astronomy tours, plus our many bushwalks, scenic flights and other guided and non-guided tours, offer an experience not easily forgotten.
Arkaroola Astronomical Observatory provides you with a rare opportunity to tour the universe by combining one of Australias largest privately owned astronomical observatories with new age Star Chairs.
Under the expert tuition of Arkaroolas guides, this tour makes for the type of intergalactic experience that is not normally available to anyone but astronomers and scientists. You will find some of the best astronomical viewing conditions in the southern hemisphere and our night skies are free of atmospheric light pollution to provide you with a truly unforgettable experience.
Three professionally equipped observatories are available for tours and you are encouraged to bring your own equipment. Our equipment includes: Two 360mm (14-inch) f-11 Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain computer controlled telescopes, Two 124mm (5-inch) Meade Maksutov-Cassegrain computer controlled telescopes, Three Star Chairs, each fitted with powerful 20x80 astronomical binoculars and computer and manually operated. There are three piers with wedges for your own telescopes. Astrophotography equipment, including CCD, is also available.
We offer our guests a large variety of guided 4WD tours as well as offering tag-along self guided tours for those wishing to drive their own vehicles. Note that our Ridgetop Tour, because of the extremely rugged terrain, is not available as a self-drive tour.
Bushwalking, birdwatching and mountain bike riding are available.
Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary provides caravan and camping accomodation, together with a variety of motel type units and lodges, as well as a backpacker bunkhouse.
Even though we are quite remote from the nearest town, you wont miss much in the way of comfort when staying at Arkaroola.
