Big luxury, comfort top cashed up caravan buyers wish list
Gail from Adelaide Shores draws the BIG4 Cabins prize winner
Australians want bigger caravans with all the creature comforts and luxuries like ensuites, DVD players and LCD and fully equipped kitchens RV Camping Leisurefest Show Organiser Peter Wright told GoSeeAustralia today.
People want all the luxuries and this is driven by the cashed up baby boomer generation who are planning for their retirement years, he said.
Fuel prices have no bearing on the trend and growth over the past year in the manufacture and purchase of larger caravans, motorhomes and fifth wheelers is significant he said.
Leisurefest attracted many informed caravan and motorhome buyers who know exactly what they want.

The preference for bigger recreational vehicles will escalate as we move towards 2007, Peter Wright said.
In response to such strong demand, therewas a huge range of luxury caravans, motorhomes and fifth wheelers on display at the 15th RV Camping Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse, in the Melbourne suburb of Springvale from 10am to 5 pm on Friday October 6 to Sunday October 8.
Visitors to Leisurefest saw a distinct trend towards larger, twin axle caravans decked out with all the modern comforts available on four wheels.
Its the baby boomers that are buying them, Peter Wright said.
Theyve worked hard for years so they feel they deserve a little luxury. Priced in the $45,000 $80,000 bracket, these caravans feature bathrooms with vanities and vacuum flush toilets, home entertainment equipment, fully-equipped kitchens and solar panels.
Lake Hume Tourist Park pool and water slide
There were more than 20 caravan brands on display at Leisurefest ranging from the small to the not-so-small including a host of new local manufacturers like Nova, Opalite and Aussiewide, he said.
Fifth wheelers have emerged as a popular choice among consumers, Peter Wright said. They are a niche market, preferred by people taking longer holidays because you can disconnect the tow vehicle and do day trips from each destination.
The growth of fifth wheelers has been astonishing, he said. The key benefit is the stability gained through hauling them via a pin coupling.

Therewere a number of fifth wheeler exhibitors at Leisurefest offering products ranging from smaller units capable of being towed by a standard Ute to 11 metre long models towed by a Ford F250. Exhibitors included Trailblazers, Travelhome, King of the Road, Forest River, Escape, Venture and Fifth Wheelers Australia.
Motorhomes continue to grow in popularity as more Australians hit the road to do the big lap of Australia in comfort and style. Prices range from $50,000 to $750,000.
Motorhome brands at Leisurefest included Winnebago, Jayco, Sunliner, AVan, Kea, Matilda and Wirraway.
The latest effort from Melbourne-based manufacturer Scenic Caravans has custom built a twin axle caravan featuring a host of off road extras. The new caravan has 15 inch wheels, solid tank guards, independent suspension and tailored shock absorption.

Leisurefest was bigger with more than 350 of the latest caravans, motorhomes, campervans, tent trailers, pop-tops, off-road campers and 4WDs. Plus therewas a great collection of tents, camping equipment, accessories and clothing, and off-road equipment, parts and accessories.
Organisers said campers and tent trailerswere popular, with growing demand by the more adventurous travellers driving record sales.
We had some serious 4 x 4 parts and accessories and alternative power technology on display that excited off road enthusiast, Peter Wright said. Roughing it just isnt what it used to be.
Last year, tent trailer and camper trailer manufacture grew by more than 15 per cent, particularly the off road sector which caters to the more adventurous 18 to 45 year olds. Industry experts expect this segment to continue growing, particularly in the $10,000 - $20,000 price bracket.

As the industry grows so too do the vast range of products and accessories. From suspension systems, solar power and navigation and communications equipment to roof racks, driving lights, tyres and more, there are thousands of products and accessories available to improve any off road adventure.
The 4WD and off road displays at Leisurefest are hugely popular year after year and visitors are always interested in the latest gadgets and accessories, Peter Wright said.
These products make off road travel safer and easier and therefore more accessible, especially for people who previously didnt have the confidence to stray off a bitumen road.
