Global Ford Ranger hits Australian market with up to 3350kg tow claim

The new Ford Ranger claims a towing capability of 3350 kilograms (TDCi-powered 4x2 Hi-Rider and 4x4 only) and water-wading capability of 800 millimetres (4x2 Hi-Rider and 4x4 only).

Industry wesiteAutoNews reports that the Ford Ranger is the first ute of its type to get 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating under the crash test protocol.

As the Mazda BT-50 is the same man in a different hat it will be interesting to see if the BT-50 comes up with 5 stars too.

Payload capacity goes up to 1528 kg on 2.2 TDCi-powered 4x2 XL Hi-Rider Single Cab Chassis.

The Ranger pickup aims at customers in 180 markets around the world the result of a new global compact pickup truck platform.

Ranger introduces three new engines two Ford Duratorq TDCi diesels and one Ford Duratec petrol unit that deliverssubstantial torque andclass matchingfuel-efficiency.

Ford says the first model to be released in Australia is the 3.2 TDCi-powered Double Cab 4x4 XL and XLT the remainder of the range will follow in early 2012.

Ford says Rangers new 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi five-cylinder diesel engine has a substantial 470 Nm of torque and power rated at 147 kW. Its fuel consumption in a combined cycle is among the leaders in its class, ranging from 8.4 L/100 km on a 4x2 variant to 9.6 L/100 km on the range-leading Wildtrak 4x4. All models are fitted with an 80-litre fuel tank.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is among control features new to Ranger that assist vehicle stability.

Included is Trailer Sway Control which Ford says provides stability control when towing a trailer.

GoSeeAustralia asked Ford for towing ball weight specifications on the new Ford Ranger -

  • What is the maximum ball weight Ford recommends please for the new Ranger models?
  • Does Ford recommend and warranty the use of Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH) and Friction Sway control?
  • If yes does Ford include WDH and Friction Sway gear in its product range?

Peter Fadeyev Product Communications Manager for Ford Motor Company of Australia Ltd says:
The maximum ball weight varies by model and is:
220kg for 2.5L Petrol 4x2.
250kg for 2.2L Diesel 4x2 low rider.
335kg for all other variants.

The recommended weight to be applied on the towball is a minimum six percent of of the gross trailer weight (up to maximum of 10 percent). Max permissible axle loads must not be exceeded.
The Ford PX Ranger has been tested for all operating and load conditions and meets all requirements without load levelling bars, therefore use of these bars is not recommended by Ford.
