Newbies out in force as GoSee puts three company tug and van combinations through extended evaluations

GoSee notes this week the larger than usual number of Newbies on the road. First timers trying caravanning. Possibly new financial year retirees.

GoSee is on the move with our 19ft Jayco Westport and GoSee's 2010 Holden Colorado LT-R VCDi 3 litre 4x4 auto crew cab pickup tow tug. Right now we are at Robinvale on the Murray River about 40 minutes out of Mildura where we tookthe picture of the other end of the caravanning spectrum to show the experience lasts.

It is a 1975 original caravan with a Toyota HJ60 (standard model G ) tow tug. GoSee has a retro 4 litre GX HJ60 manual diesel 1985 Sahara among our tow tugs. The engine and transmission in this 'Last of the Heavy Weights' is still bullet-proof as it approaches 400,000km.

GoSee has another interesting rig which we are evaluating in Queensland. GoSee has added two new Jaycos to our travelling offices. They are a 21 and 23ft Jayco Sterling with slide-outs. The 23 footer is back at our HQ in Fyshwick, Canberra now after two week on the road. But the new GoSee Jayco 21 footer is heading south with the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo SUV 4x4 diesel as tow tug.

Our evaluation of the Chrysler Jeep tug and the Jayco 21ft Sterling provides plenty of practical insight which we will report to GoSeers in a series of Information Articles.

To add to the value of the evaluation we have two complete Newbies to caravanning, Bob and Millie Farmer taking their first big trip. Many caravanners and the caravanning industry will know them as caravan park owners.

Bob distinguished himself with a particularly effective term as President of VicParks, a group formed in 1965 to protect, promote, and advance the caravan park industry .

The Jayco Sterlings and their Jeep and Toyota tow tugs started at the Jayco factory in Dandenong South, Victoria on Tuesday, May 1. They crossed Victoria to Broken Hill NSW and head north to Queensland via Cobar and Bourke.

Bob and Millie went in at the caravanning deep end, but our longest serving heavy hauler, GoSee MD Graham Wallace and partner Pamela Windross provided back-up throughout the initial learning curve.

They travelled in company hauling the new 23ft Jayco Sterling with the GoSee flagship tug our 4.2 litre Toyota Turbo diesel Sahara 100 series. As a heavy duty tug this 5-gear auto vehicle, the second TD Sahara GoSee has owned, is so good we are in no hurry to change it after seven years of towing service.

Both GoSee Jayco Sterlings and the Jayco Westport are fitted with the latest Weight Distribution (WDH) products from our friends at Hayman Reese.

Right off the bat the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel impresses as a cost effective heavy duty tug. At $58,000 on the road there is a huge saving when compared to our current 2005 GoSee Toyota Sahara's $88,000 on road cost when new.

Jeep trade in value could be seen as an issue, but GoSee thinks the big initial cost saving is a major plus.

This is the second Toyota Sahara TD auto we have had in the company as a tug. The first GoSee Sahara was a 4-speed auto with an on-road cost of $106,000. Which illustrates why we are in no rush to move to Toyota's 200 series.

GoSee knows our Toyota tugs are reliable, but we struggle now to see value compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee on road cost for a vehicle rated to haul 3000kg and above.

GoSee made this value for dollarpoint to a Geelong Holden dealer who was keen for us to move up from our current GoSee's 2010 Holden Colorado LT-R VCDi 3 litre 4x4 auto crew cab pickup to the latest version.

On road costs for the new Colorado diesel with the 'extras' GoSee regards as 'must have' do not make a changeover attractive in our opinion.
