Rohan McDonald was out mowing the lawns at Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park in Victoria's Grampians this morning (8.31am Saturday). He says the bushfire threat is smouldering in the Mount Difficult Range, but there was little or no wind as the day got under way. It was funny weather up on the dam last night ( (Lake Bellfield dam wall) there was a southerly and maybe metre waves on the dam.
We have driven through Halls Gap and everything looks OK, he said. I have looked at the forecast for the week and that is for southerlies so we should be OK.
The closest the fire got yesterday was about 5km north off Halls Gap around the Mount Difficult range, he said. There is no property damage in Halls Gap itself. Thanks to the firemen that were ready to help out!
At the moment blue skies and sunshine with a nice southerly breeze blowing everything away from town, Rohan McDonald said.
The main thing now is to get the park back into operation, he said.
Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park in Victoria's Grampians put its bushfire plan in place on Thursday.
The bushfires burning in the National park turned towards Halls Gap yesterday as winds shift in front of a predicted change.The 43,000ha bushfire has killed one person at Roses Gap and is now threatening Halls Gap and surrounding towns.
All guests were evacuated Thursday night. Rohan and Josephina McDonald of Halls Gap Lakeside reopened the pretty tourist park in October 2012.Josephina and the children left yesterday and are now safe with family at Winchelsea. Rohan andPark Manager, Michael Bollein stayed to defend the park.
They blocked downpipes and filled all spoutings. Every hose was going full blast.
2.25pm Friday RohanMcDonald said: We have soaked the park and are now up on top of the (Lake Bellfield) dam wall. The fire has not arrived yet.
Lake Fyans Holiday Park guests have also been evacuated but manager, Janine, is also remaining.
We are just watching what is happening. We are cautious but optimistic, she said, The Herald Sun reports yesterday.
Lake Bellfield is located in the eastern Grampians near Halls Gap and has an inlet from Fyans Creek. Lake Bellfield supplies water to Halls Gap and Pomonal townships and is the main source of supply for the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline system, supported by Taylors Lake.
Yesterday (Fri) ABC News reported that Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay says police believe 12 of the 68 fires in Victoria have been deliberately lit.
He said detectives are investigating the suspected arson attacks.
There are people out there at the moment that are deliberating lighting fires, he said.
More than 100 bushfires are burning across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales as a record breaking searing heatwave griped Victoria for four days straight pushing temperatures above 40 degrees.
A cool change which came through from about 2pm yesterday in Southern Victoria helped firefighter but winds which accompanied the change drove fire fronts across the state.
Yesterday in Victoria, there were 68 bushfires burning ; in South Australia hundreds of firefighters were battling 19 blazes; and in NSW there were 38 blazes burning, the ABC reported yesterday.
Lightning activity Wednesday 15th January has started multiple fires across western Victoria, including several in the Grampians National Park.
Two fires in the Northern end of the Grampians in the Pohlners Road area merged and burntabout 1293 hectares as at 3pm Thursday.
Fire operations have been focussed on aircraft attack as the terrain is too difficult forfirefighters to reach on foot.
